Over $17,000 Raised for RAFA-V!

In "The Audacity of Hope" President Obama wrote, "what binds us together is greater than what drives us apart, and [that] if enough people believe in the truth of that proposition and act on it ... we can get something meaningful done." It is with HUGE joy that we announce that we raised OVER $17,000 at RAFApalooza- with donations for Rafael Delgadillo still coming in from those who could not attend!! We have not yet determined the fund allocation, as Rafael is still healing and his medical bills continue to mount, and the priority is, of course, his health.

And so to each and every one of you: thank you. For not being indifferent. For having the audacity to hope, and the compulsion to act on it. For coming together. For getting something meaningful done. For helping Rafa heal. For your love, support and generosity. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Thank you to all who refused to be indifferent in the face of the culture of violence and indifference in New Orleans. Last night's RAFApalooza was an astonishing, amazing success THANKS TO YOU.

We will be calculating the final tallies over the weekend and on Monday, look for an announcement regarding how much we all, as a caring community, raised to benefit the health of Rafael and the future of New Orleans.

Fundraiser planning meetings!

Attention!

We will be holding two planning meetings next week - Tuesday the 25th and Thursday the 27th - to talk about our ideas and suggestions for the upcoming RAFA-V fundraiser in mid-November.

They will both be on the third floor of the Coca-Cola Bottling Building on 1050 S. Jefferson Davis Parkway, from 5:30-7pm. Hope you can make one (or both!)

Exciting News: Potluck Now Folded into Multi-Partner Event in November!

Amazing update! Thanks to new, exciting partnerships RAFA V has developed with fellow New Orleans organizations, including the City of New Orleans, we are postponing the October 20 Potluck and Conversation in order to roll it over into an even larger event during the third week of November! Look for a huge announcement at the end of the month after we finalize all the details, and stay tuned! As always, you can still donate to Rafa by visiting ANY Capital One Bank in the country and deposit your donation into the "Rafael Delgadillo Donation Account" or donate online to right here on this page (look over to the right hand side!) New Orleans, LA

Fundraiser for community activist and Finn's 6 v 6 soccer player Rafael Delgadillo who was shot during an attempted carjacking.

He is now out of the hospital and recovering.

Funds are being raised to help defray his medical costs.

We will be flipping cups from noon -2:30
Winners of this tournament will be greatly rewarded

$50 per 6 person team (or $10 per person) ..includes flipping beer

Says Rafa about the two boys who shot him: ""If I had them face to face, I'd embrace them. I'd forgive them. ... If I sat here and complained and was bitter, it wouldn't do me any good. I've accepted what's happened, and I'll be OK with whatever the future is. ... I couldn't have got to where I'm at without the prayers and well wishes and thoughts. I haven't done this by myself, and I want to thank everybody I've ever met in my life. Everybody."

Upcoming Events

Tomorrow (October 8), meet with volunteers who are manning a booth at the Hispanic Heritage Festival from 3 to 10 p.m. at Heritage Park in Rivertown on Williams Boulevard in Kenner. We'll have some amazing raffle prizes, information about upcoming events, and most importantly, it's an opportunity for the community to interact and see what's happening and give their feedback and ideas.

RAFA-V will also be hosting a community potluck on October 20. It will also be in Kenner, at the Kenner Heritage Hall, 303 Williams Blvd., from 7-10pm. We will be breaking bread together to discuss how youth violence affects us all and talk about ways to move forward. Entrance will be $10 suggested donation at the door, or $5 with a dish to share! We are expecting about 100 people.

Rafael Delgadillo, Outreach Coordinator at Puentes and longtime community organizer was shot in an attempted carjacking in the early hours of September 25. He is currently recovering but still hospitalized. The community that he has cared for all these years are doing whatever they can to give back to him, and to help address the underlying systemic issues of youth violence.

This page will list all fundraising efforts and events as well as serve as a central location for all information.
